Comprehensive Cancer Coalitions

Focus on a Comprehensive Cancer Coalition:

The Northeast Cancer Control Coalition has been in existence since 1993.  Joyce Lara, Tobacco Free Missouri; Lori Moots, RN, Health Educator for Knox, Shelby, Clark, and Scotland counties; and Mary Ann Reed RN, Health Educator for Linn and Sullivan counties were presenters at the annual National Conference of Tobacco or Health held recently in San Francisco.  They presented the three-year Smokebusters program developed with the assistance of area schools and community organizations.  Over 400 youth from twenty area counties in northeast Missouri have become effective environmental policy advocates in tobacco use prevention.  Students from Marion and Ralls counties were in attendance at this years training in Macon.

Over 3,500 people registered for the conference from the US as well as foreign countries.  “It was awesome to see that many people interested in tobacco use prevention assembled in one place.  What was even more awesome was to have it in San Francisco where we could go into any restaurant and not have to ask for a “non-smoking” table.  All of the public places in California are tobacco free,” Reed noted.  “We talked to people from many different states and even outside the US about our program and how they might do the same thing in their area.  We did come home with a sense of pride in the work being done here in Missouri.  Going to a conference such as this gave us our booster shot that helps us keep going.  We know that what we are all doing, from the kids to the adults, is making a difference for a healthier Missouri.

Breast & Cervical Cancer Coalitions

From the Program Manger

Missouri’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP) Grant Year 10--BCCCP applauds the excellent efforts of our 94 clinical partners, coalitions members and outreach coordinators in the fight against breast and cervical cancer. From August 15, 2001- September 29, 2002 BCCCP screened 6,160 women and conducted 4,089 mammograms.  Of those mammograms 84% were for women over 50 years of age (our target audience). BCCCP also paid for 3,349 Pap tests and 22% were for women who have not had a Pap test in the past five years (our target audience).  These results exceeded the minimum objectives set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Focus on a BCCCP Coalition

Coalition of Hispanic Women Against Cancer

Clara Reyes assumed Chairmanship of the Coalition of Hispanic Women Against Cancer, based in Kansas City.  Dr. Ximena Ilbaca-Somoza, outgoing Chairman of the coalition, welcomed Mrs. Reyes, and thanked all the coalition members who work so hard to provide cancer screenings to all medically-underserved women.  Mrs. Reyes, along with her husband, Manuel, are publishers of the bi-lingual DOS MUNDOS weekly newspaper that has served Greater Kansas City Spanish-speaking community since 1981. Mrs. Reyes is a breast cancer survivor and an outspoken advocate of early detection as the best protection against breast cancer.

Members of this coalition include representatives from the American Cancer Society, Cancer Action, Patient Navigator Services BCCCP, Kansas Free-To-Know, The R.A. Bloch Cancer Foundation, Truman Medical Center, Cancer Information Service, and other organizations and volunteers.
